Antique Baby
Rattle
Antiques are an item that is
considered both a collectable and aged. There are many different types
of items that are considered antiques: cars, clocks, glassware,
furniture, cast iron, paintings, etc. Antique baby rattles are another
niche that has been popular among collectors. They exhibit
craftsmanship that is no longer available as well as detailing that is
not usually seen in new baby rattles. It is doubtful that many of these
baby rattles were used; they were for keepsake purposes or to begin a
family tradition.

Antique silver baby rattles are
unique. Many had bell and whistles; some displayed animal shapes. One
of the most expensive antique silver baby rattles is the 2” sterling
silver Tiffany baby rattle. There are other examples of antique baby
rattles that can be found through private owners, public dealers as well
as at flea markets. There are specific rattles that are highly sought.
For instance, the Charles Horner Chester silver teddy bear rattle. It
features realistic detailing of the eyes, fur and claws. There is a
bell or ball in the stomach that creates the sound. A silver ring is
attached to the teddy bear; the bear measures 4.5” high and date stamped
1945.
